Koh Phangan stretches
19 kilometres from north to south and 12 kilometres from west to
east. The island is mainly mountainous jungle surrounded by beautiful,
white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. You will not find high-rise
hotels or package resorts here and there are still many exquisite,
undeveloped beaches to be explored. There are less bungalows and
less crowded beaches on this island - these factors, plus the fact
that the cost of living here is about half price from that of Samui,
is making this island the preferred alternative. Until very recently
the most common way of getting from one side of the island to the
other was by boat or foot, but these days many new roads have been
built making it much easier to access most parts of the island.
The island is extremely fertile with many waterfalls
in lush surroundings to swim in. Be prepared for steep climbs at
most of these falls. There are more than thirty
magnificent beaches to choose from. The north of the island is more
tranquil than the south although wherever you are on the island,
you can usually find a quiet spot to relax.
